The Narrow Boat To The Deep North
United Kingdom
Приєднався 9 лис 2016
A little, unassuming channel about two narrowboat-live-aboard-virgins fixing up a 58' project boat over the winter. She's a poorly boat who was in a fire, but hopefully we'll bring her back to life soon enough. Her name is now Briny Marlin and once she's better we'll see how far north we can all go. Oh, and there'll be some poems thrown in every now and then because we like poems (especially Basho). Hope you enjoy the journey with us.
#30 Tiling the hearth & surround on our Narrowboat
One of the things we've been wanting to do for some time is to install the stove, tile the hearth & surround with all the right protection in place: fire board, air gap etc. So in October and November, a little later than planned, after researching how to tile we bought some rather nice metal mosaic tiles along with buckets, floats, grout and lots of other gubbins, and set out to do the work... and here's how we did it. We know it's a bit odd to put this up in summer - but now we're in Lockdown, we've got some time to edit the videos we've been filming.

The story so far… sorry, that would take too long… cut to the end: we’re fitting and wiring a gauge to our water tank. The tank's been in and out of the boat so many times it’s got a little bilious, so we’ve also refreshed it with a water treatment called Aqua Sol. Переглядів 3,4 тис.6 років тому
We're getting ready to sand our floor and need to finsh what we started some time ago - our floor lockers! When we fitted the floor boards we didn't quite know what we wanted to do with the floor lockers so we removed the ballast and left a space. Now we're filling that space with a box, a frame and a lid. Jacqueline puts her nifty proto-woodworking skills into play while Martin does some mitre...

Dont hit a scraper with a hammer! Use the correct tools, maybe?
Would of been useful to know how you calibrated the tank sensor with guage
LIve very close, great to travel through with you, thank you, Chris B-R
Did you ever finnish the boat?
Well it's clear to see which chemistry the salesman is pushing this Month with his biased Positive views of Li-Fe v over his Negative opinions of most other Battery Chemistries! :-) I hope you'll forgive the pun! Yes, Li-Fe batteries are the future, but they need just as much particular and specific special care as any other battery chemistry/technology, if you abuse any battery you will damage it and to suggest that you can simply 'Plug 'n' Play' differing technology batteries into an existing environment is misleading to say the least. He successfully side-stepped the financial discussion because (I believe) he knows Li-iON are still an expensive option with eye watering ROI estimates when compared with more established tech batteries. The only genuine Sealed for Life battery is a Gel battery which when it fails, is unrecoverable and I wouldn't touch one of those with your bargepole let alone mine :-), so whether you let your heart or your wallet decide is personal choice, they all work at the end of the day, personally, my AGM batteries are still going strong in their 10th Year of ownership indicating a resting voltage of > 12.5V after 4/5 days of standing idle without a charge, I have however converted them to a maintained version from the outset of ownership and regularly top them up, they are after all STILL a lead acid battery.
Thanks for the informative video, in regards to some comments received unless it is relevant or you can be constructive take your negativity elsewhere and fester with other like minded people.
How long does each log last . Thanks
interesting, so how many lithium batteries would I need to replace a bank of 4x115ah leisure batteries?
👍👌🇨🇦❤
You’re both doing great work. Just be careful hitting the handle of your blade with the heel of your hand, as it is possible to cause paralysis doing so. Keep churning out the vlogs …… it’s fascinating watching your progress. Best wishes and take care Helen 😄
👍👌🇨🇦❤, new sub, gr8 stuff
Where have you gone??? is the Boat still in the yard???
I can still see the boat in the yard, are you still working on it?
Hello Martin, can you give any advice on replacing LA with Lithium batteries? Is it a case or one out one in?
Hi Dale, unfortunately not and depends on your set-up, inverter size and power needs. Our Lithium batteries needed other 'blue' boxes to make them work, charge and maintain the right way. We have a victron multiplus 12/3000 so needed 5x 80ah batteries (originally bought 3 but it didn't cover VMP 12/3000. 110ah back then were much more expensive and we had room for 3). Victron batteries have a certain amount of additional tech inside and maybe why they're much more expensive and bigger, but helps in monitoring/charging etc. So it is about cost in general, cost of Lithium, wiring, and the blue boxes: Victron Battery Management System BMS 12/200, Victron -VE.Bus BMS to BMS 12-200 alternator control cable, Victron BatteryProtect 12/24V-100A as well as double poss/neg cables on the inverter, and the batteries star wired not in series or parallel. The are lots of fuses along the way. It's very expensive and complicated unless you know what you're doing (I didn't and now know the principle but not how to). Have a look at the "12 Volts Boating Group" on Facebook, there are 2 groups the other 'Volt' without the 's'. Graham who runs it helped us and there are things in the 'file' section you can read about Lithium and wiring. His preference is the Victron Battery because it's a bit simpler but we bough ours in 2017 and things change, Victron Battery were out of our price range and we thought it was a simple to just use Lithium without all the other gubbins and not LA. Though it took some time to get things right, lots of time and expense, I'm happy with it but it is a question of weighing up the pros and cons for your situation, your set-up now, space, money... what was right for me might not be for you but it is still worth considering. Hope that helps. Best, Martin
@@TheNarrowBoatToTheDeepNorth Thank you Martin, Graham has been in touch already through FB and has given me lots of advice, I think that costs and life expectancy’s the key figure, we have booked a New Build slot with Braidbar so the investment in our current Narrowboat would not be returned. But it has given me ideas for the next one! Thank you fir getting back to me. Regards Dale
Four minutes in. When are we going to get started on the information?
Like your natural Humour
Good luck, will enjoy watching your progress
Will you be able to get back on the boat soon
Having just caught up I’m wondering how it’s all going now, you seem to have been very quiet for a while. Hoping you guys are ok, safe and well! Xx
Thanks! What type of paint did you use on your ash faced ply?
That's a good question, it was a mixture of Auro 160 Woodstain and Mylands Varnish, there's a vlog about it here ua-cam.com/video/Bi8uub7ns0E/v-deo.html . It's low VOC and actual smells good. Thanks for looking. Best, Martin
Very nice job
Thank you! Cheers! Best, Martin
It’s just beautiful! Well done ❤️❤️
Just catching up as I want to renovate a Narrowboat I an currently purchasing. On question, didn’t you fancy replacing the old tank with Stainless as you had done the hard work getting it out and back in.
Hi Nobby, water tanks are very expensive unless you can do it yourself. Steel tanks have to be painted on the inside, I believe, and therefore maintained after time (re-painted etc). The water is more prone to freezing and as we had a plastic one and not very old, it seemed a good idea to keep with it as it has quite large capacity. Best, Martin
Are you two still working on briney as not had vlog for ages and I did look forward to them ?
Hi Howard, 2020 was a rather strange year with lockdownds and Tier restrictions which seriously hampered our ablilty to even get to the boat so we didn't do much filming - mainly working on smaller things that we could do in one or two days when we were able to get. We do have one vlog in the can, but the whole thing needs editing and shaping, something we filmed during the summer during the more relaxed restrictions. It's on my list of things to do but paid work gets in the way :) Thanks for nudging us though and for watching. Best MaArtin
The tape on the battens was brilliant. I have watched so many struggling with vicious tools to remove insulation. All you did was pull off the tape. Genius!
Hi Stephenie, thank you for watching. Seems obvious after the fact but useful to remember and did save a lot of time. Best, Martin
So how is it three years later ?
It looks very nice
Thanks Steve! Best, Martin
Thanks for sharing, I'm planning to do the same and your video is a great help
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for whatching. best, Martin
is there a passing point in the tunnel where the other boat passed or is it just wide enough to fit 2 boats in? i walk both ends often and it doesn't look wide enough for 2!
Most tunnels are just about big enough for 2 to pass slowly, I think there's at least one that you have to book ahead to enter as it's old and so low/small (in some cases you even have to weigh the boat down more). Thanks for watching! best, Martin
Good job
Thank you! And for watching 🙂
Loving the videos. So much good information. May I ask roughly what are the costs per month or year for the hard standing?
Hi, I've replied to this post twice now, I'm not sure whats happeing :/ let me know if you still need this info. , best, Martin
@@TheNarrowBoatToTheDeepNorth Hi Martin. This the 1st reply I have seen regarding this. I know the charges vary thoughout the country with some charging more for lift but less for hard standing or vica versa.
@@DEmma1972 Lifting is around £350 and hardstanding is charged by the foot - 57ft for £192 p/m plus electic, this hasn't changed while we've been there but it might be diferent for new customers, but it gives you an idea.

Thank you Alex, and for commenting. Very slow progress this year for the obvious resons but hoping to get things moving a little quicker from now on, fingers crossed though :)
I guess things slowed down due to the virus but hope you can crack on again soon
Hey guys what an awesome job you have done..... I've binge watched since yesterday to get caught up... Now I have to wait for the next one :( ... lol.... Anyway I'm certainly looking forward to it... Keep safe...
Welcome aboard! glad to have you along. Best, Martin
You pair certainly do not make things easy for yourselves but the results are stunning. Well done!
Sometimes we do think we should just do the box standard thing but in the end, this is our home and the fire place is something that we'll look at every day and night, and so is a focus, so, it needed to be special for us. We can sit back and say, yes, we agree with Stephanie, it is stunning! Thank you for the comment and for watching, best, Martin
The floor took so long because you took such care. It looks beautiful.
Thank you Stephanie, it's also that darn maple, it's so hard :)
I've just discovered your channel and have subscribed. Those tiles look fab. - worth all the hard work! I'm now off to catch up on your earlier videos :-)
Welcome aboard Katherine! It seems YT have stopped notifying me when people watch a video so, sorry for the delay in responding. We're please with the way they came out, something very sparkly to look at. Thanks for watching, best, Martin
When are you planning to get the boat in the water guys???
Hi Ian, well, it was going to be late summer/early autumn but with the lockdown thingfs will have to be pushed back as we're not locked down on the boat. best, Martin
I didn’t receive a notification either, but was checking your channel, pleased to see a new video up. The tiles look great, very effective 😊
Hi Jenny, yes YT does seem to be a bit hit and miss with notifications, for me to. Glad you found it though and glad you like the tiles. Fires are such a centre piece especially went lit, the tiles do add to that pleasure. And, in brighter weather, they shine and sparkle :) best, Martin
Love it!
Thank you! And thanks for watching, best, Martin
Great job
Hi Jaycee, thank you and thank you for watch! Best, Martin
Annoying that I subscribe to you but YT failed to send me a notification ! Rant over - I recently did the same (or similar) and was happy that I followed the guidelines - my biggest problem was the flue. I too have a Morso Sq but I didn’t want to fit a reducing collar and go with the reduced diameter flue so I went straight for a 5 inch single wall pipe (cheap) and had a chimney collar bored out to accommodate it - what flue setup do you have ?
Hi Martin, don't get me started on YT, they're ment to send me notifcations when someone leaves a comment but it's quite random, sometimes I get them sometimes not, like yours and most of the ones for this video so far (or they come in days later), my rant over. Seems the guilelines are just that rather anything more, and there's very little in the regs. re. the stove. We have a basic flue which I think is 5" which was bought at the time we first got the boat - so didn't know a lot then, still don't :) - but, it fitted the collar so that's what we've used so far. It's also the thing we still need to properly finish on the stove, we'd like a double skin flue though there's pros and cons to both, but that's another day. I like the idea of the efficiency of a double lined flue but, on a narrowboat, they do look massive. Are yuo on the water?
The Narrow Boat To The Deep North - yes floating in a boatyard on the Coventry - I had a part fitted sailaway and she’s ok for me to live on - just need to install the oven and hob then the drawers and cupboard fronts and then I need to create cupboards and shelves for storage as most of my stuff is still in boxes or on the floor
Sounds good. Are yuo able to work on it now due to the current state of affairs?
The Narrow Boat To The Deep North - just before the lockdown I made the decision to move onto the boat and leave my house for my son to look after so I’m effectively a live-aboard, so once lockdown started I decided to spend it on the boat as I can still work from here anyway. It’s been very strange, enthusiasm has disappeared as I can’t get hold of anything I need - I now just want to get the boat out of the mooring and see some life on the cut before winter
I can imagine how frustrating it is both from advancing the fit-out, we're in lockdown away from the boat, and keeping the enthusiasm going under these circumstances. Hopefully it won't be too long before things start opening up or being available.
Glad to see you back. Been a while.
Hi Cheryl, thank you! It's been too long we know but we do try. Thanks for commenting, best, Martin
Cracking job guys. You’ve given me lots of tips as this is a job I have to do on our boat when the restrictions are lifted. Yours looks fab. Thanks for sharing. Colin
Our pleasure Colin, glad it was of help. Good luck with the hearth - when you get chance, best, Martin
I was only checking your channel yesterday to see if I’d missed anything and today you’ve uploaded your fireplace tiling which looks very professional. Well done guys. Your tiles look great.👍👍. P.S. Do you have an estimate for when you will be on water?
Hi Louise - thank you! glad you like them as well. Having made some significant progress at the end of last year and the start of this, we hoped that it would be sometime this summer, even late summer, but with covid19 and being in lockdown we're not sure now. Thanks for watching and commenting, we appreciate it. Best, Martin
Love the tile. You’ll never get tired of it unlike patterned tiles. It is also reflective so quite nice to bring in light from the windows, ceiling lights or table lamps. Great job, folks.
We totally agree! Anything to add light around a dark stove. Thanks for you comment and for watching :) best, Martin
Glad to see you back. I do like the tiles, well done.👍
Glad you like them! We're really please with how they turned out. Thanks for watching, best, Martin
Worlds largest floor tile and the worlds smallest wall tile - I like your style ! Very enjoyable video, thanks for posting.
Hi C Cooper - I don't really do LOL's but I did laugh out loud reading your comment. We originally had a different idea for the surround but we just could wait any longer to do it and had already bought the floor tile a year ago. We then found the metal title and thought they'd work well as an alternative, and go with the larger tile. Thanks for watching!
Lovely to see another of your videos. The fireplace looks great and I wouldn’t expect anything different from you two. The boat’s looking great. Hopefully it won’t be too long before you’re afloat. Thanks as always for sharing your experience.
Thanks so much! A little bit of a set back right with covid19 and missing our boat maddly but we're staying safe and helping my parents to do the same. Best, Martin
